When it comes to headphones, we rarely find surprises in the scope of delivery. Here, of course, there is the usual scope. There are four pairs of ear pads, a charging cable and instructions included.

Design

The design of the EarFun Air Pro 3 is kept quite classic. These are stick-style headphones that only come in one color.

Actually, one would think that the sound characteristics of the Air Pro 2 are used here and that a balanced sound pattern is created. However, one dared to develop the Earfun Air Pro SV further, which has a clearly bass-heavy sound.

The clear strengths here are the sub-bass and bass in general, which are brought to the fore here. The midrange is a bit lost, but there is also an emphasis on the highs . Actually a typical tuning that you often hear and is probably the most popular. A more open sound would have done the headphones quite well, however, because they are a bit compact and narrow.

If you like a slightly bass-heavy sound and are a fan of hip-hop or EDM, for example , then these headphones are definitely a step in the right direction. If you’re not a fan of strong bass, you might want to take a look at the EarFun Air S. However, they can keep up with their biggest competitor, the Soundcore Life P3, in the bass range and are even more convincing in the treble range.

Active noise cancellation

In the EarFun Air Pro 3’s arsenal is active noise cancellation, also known as ANC. This picks up external noise and can suppress it. This is to create a quiet listening environment. I can’t imagine life without it on buses and trains and a noisy office is also easier to endure this way. However, we are not at a top level here, but in the upper middle class.

The ANC is good at filtering out monotonous and deep noises, such as a bus engine. But the EarFun Air 3 Pro are also good at reducing noise, such as in an airplane. A weak point here are voices. These are dampened, but they do not disappear completely. However, they are no worse here than the competition in this price range.

But then you have to say that even music with a volume of less than 50% helps a lot here. In combination you can isolate yourself very well. With podcasts or audio books, however, you definitely have to live with the rest of the ambient noise.

But the headphones can not only hide the outside world, but also amplify it. The ambient mode reproduces the outside noise, so you can hear the outside world despite the in-ears. This keeps you responsive and allows you to continue listening to music. You could also have a conversation like this. With some of these systems voices are distorted, here one manages to remain relatively faithful to the original.

A common weakness of the ANC is wind. Since the microphones are used for this, wind generates the typical storm noises. In the meantime, you can occasionally see functions in the high-end area that reduce this effect, but here the wind remains an opponent.

Headset

EarFun Air Pro 3 / A total of six microphones are installed in the headphones. In addition to capturing voice, they are also used to filter background noise from the recording. One is clearly understandable and the headphones are suitable for telephoning. Of course not perfect, but significantly better than most microphones in in-ears on the market.

Wearing Comfort

There is nothing wrong with the wearing comfort of the headphones. They sit comfortably in the ears, are compact and can therefore be worn for several hours without any problems. There is also a secure hold, which is why they are suitable for sports.

But every ear is different and your fit may vary. With the additional ear pads you can cover a wide range.

Operation & App

So that you don’t always have to take out your smartphone to adjust the music, there is a touch surface on the back of the headphones. Various gestures can be performed via these.

There is an app for the EarFun Air Pro 3 in the Play Store and App Store. There you can apply an equalizer, perform updates and adjust the controls. There is also the option of activating a game mode in order to achieve lower latency.

Connection

One of the new features is Bluetooth 5.3 with LE Audio and the corresponding support of the LC3 codec. This is the future of Bluetooth audio, slowly arriving in the present. The new version enables more energy-efficient transmission with the same quality and soon Auracast too.

Auracast aims to make it possible to share audio content to multiple devices and make it publicly available. One example is the use at the airport, where boarding announcements etc. can be heard directly through the headphones. The whole thing is still a bit of a dream of the future, although Android 13 now supports Bluetooth LE and the LC3 codec, but only 5% of Android devices are up to date.

Even then, the whole thing still works rather shakily, with a Pixel 7, for example, you have to activate LE Audio separately in the developer options in order to establish such a connection with the in-ears here. Even then, the audio transmission does not work from time to time and you often hear the announcement that the headphones have lost the connection. But here I suspect the error in the playback device and it will probably take a little longer for LE Audio to catch on. But as the saying goes, having is better than needing, and EarFun is taking the right step.

But you have several codecs in your luggage, such as Qualcomm adaptive, SBC and AAC. So you are quite well positioned here and with the aptX adaptive you also have an option with more data transmission. I also have nothing to complain about in terms of the connection quality, it is stable and the signal even survives a wall. It is important that the playback device is also important here, as there are generally serious differences between smartphones.

Multipoint is also included. This allows the headphones to be connected to two devices at the same time. For example, you can listen to music on your notebook and switch directly to your smartphone when a call comes in.

Battery Life

It is possible to listen to music with the headphones and activated noise cancellation for up to 7 hours. Without ANC you get 1 to 2 hours of runtime. In the charging case, the headphones can be fully recharged up to four times.

After that, it’s time to recharge the case. There are two ways to refill the battery of the charging case. There is a USB-C port on the back, but wireless charging via Qi is also on board.

Conclusion:

Typically, improvements and new features are added to a product line when it is re-released. But here you also decide to change the sound characteristics of the listeners. Previously, the focus was more on the balanced direction, but we are moving away from that here and focusing on bass and treble. Not bad by any means, but as an Air Pro 2 owner you are offered something different here. But if this orientation appeals to you, you get a really strong candidate in the price segment here.

The fact that Bluetooth LE and the LC3 codec are supported here is certainly important for the future, but there is currently not much coverage with the playback devices. Therefore, the integration of aptX adaptive is also the right step, so you get a reasonable Bluetooth codec with a variety of Android devices. Multipoint is also a welcome feature that is all too often left out.

The active noise cancellation is good for the price range and reliably dampens ambient noise. Of course you get more with the higher-priced models, but of course the costs are also more. I also like the transparency mode, as it reproduces the outside world relatively accurately and does not unrealistically distort it.
