Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite: smart fan for €53 on Amazon

Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite Review, Specs & Price: Is this summer already? At the current temperatures, I took my Xiaomi tower fan out of the storage room. Unfortunately, it is no longer available for purchase, but there are many other models from Xiaomi, for example the Mi Standing Fan 2 Lite at Amazon for €53.52. We tested it a while ago and got an average of 4.5 starsit also comes off very well in the customer reviews.

Even if I make it my goal every year, I never think about buying a new fan anti-cyclically, but only when the heat robs me of my first sleep. After several years with China Gadgets, the first thought was of course: “There’s something from Xiaomi!”. For the summer of 2020, the Xiaomi Mi Fan 1C was presented . In the meantime, Xiaomi has renamed the fan the Mi Fan 2 Lite so that it ranks as the cheapest fan next to the Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 and the Mi Fan Pro. Or did Xiaomi promise too much here?

  • Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite vs Mi Smart Standing Fan 1C

There is slight confusion between the Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite and the Mi Smart Standing Fan 1C. The two smart pedestal fans are exactly the same product, not even a China or Global version. Xiaomi originally presented the fan as the Mi Smart Standing Fan 1C, but the model has now simply been renamed the Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite. This can also be seen, for example, from the fact that the URL of the fan on Mi.com is still ” https://www.mi.com/de/mi-smart-standing-fan-1c “.

Scope of delivery & construction

After we ordered the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 1C, also called Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite, from Amazon for the actual release, but it never arrived, we were happy about the fast delivery from Cyberport. The packaging is noticeably smaller than that of the Standing Fan 2, it is even almost reminiscent of a notebook box. Thanks to a handle, taking it out of the Xiaomi store in Germany would n’t be so annoying if it ended up in the range there. Inside, however, everything is well packaged and, as with the Xiaomi Mi Scooter 1S, there is now a link to http://www.mihilfe.de in the package in case a problem should arise.

In the unboxing on our Instagram channel you can see how we unpacked and assembled the fan. Similar to the Standing Fan 2, this is quite quick and easy, only an Allen key with an integrated Phillips screwdriver (you should keep it, it’s “rare”) is required and is included in the scope of delivery. The box is a bit smaller because the fan rod has been divided into two parts. The upper part houses the motor including the control buttons and the cable (more on that in a moment), the lower part is simply turned on. If you have combined both parts, the rod moves to the base and has to be fixed there with a screw using an Allen key.

Then you have to screw the button for the rear grille onto the thread, then you can attach the back of the protective basket and the rotor blades. This can be fastened with a quasi-nut before you can simply screw in the front grille. Overall, this is pretty easy and self-explanatory, but of course you can also consult the German operating instructions.

How is the Xiaomi Mi Fan 2 Lite processed?

Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite Review – If you pay “that little” for a smart fan, you have to live with poor workmanship, right? No, actually that wouldn’t be Xiaomi’s thing at all. To be honest, I can’t see any differences here compared to my Xiaomi Smartmi Standing Fan 2, which is almost twice as expensive, and some of the same parts were installed here. But like the newer model, the stability isn’t the best. Because the fan rod is only a few inches into the base, it wobbles slightly, even when operated. If you accidentally hit the fan with a little force, that could have been it.

The placement of the cable is also not quite as sensible . This is firmly attached to the motor of the fan, i.e. at the top. This shortens the range from the socket if the cable is not to hang halfway up in the room. So the Mi Fan 1C can’t even be a meter away from the socket, if the cable can be annoying for you in the room, it’s at least 1.50m.

With the Smartmi Standing Fan 2 and 2S, the cable is connected to the base and can also be removed. However, the cable must be attached there, because, like our user  Beames pointed out to us that this is the only way to adjust the height of the fan. Because the pole is in two parts and one can be removed, the cable can’t sit in the base.

Simple but chic design

It is difficult to tell the different models of Xiaomi fans apart, after all they all look quite similar except for the tower fan. The Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 1C also relies on a design with rotor blades, 7 in number. These are protected by a close-meshed protective basket, which is connected to the two-part tube and the round base. In the presentation, Xiaomi advertised that the Mi Smart Standing Fan 1C/ Mi Fan 2 Lite is equipped with an “adjustable height”.

Since the fan rod is divided into two, you can simply omit the lower part during assembly and thus shrink the height from 103 cm to 66 cm. But then the screw can no longer be used for fastening. This makes the Mi Fan 1C more suitable as a table fan, but it is still relatively large. Thanks to glastuer  for the tip! Nevertheless, in our opinion, it is not what you understand as adjustable height or height adjustability.

In addition, the fan head can be tilted 20° up and 16° down, but this is also possible with the Smartmi Standing Fan 2.

Operation on the fan

Although the 1C is cheaper than the 2 and 2S, it has significantly more function keys than the newer generation. My first thought was: “Then you can’t control it via app,” but that’s still possible. There are four function buttons: power button, direct breeze/sleep mode, oscillation on/off and timer on/off.

Of course, you have to hold down the power button to switch it on and off, and you can use the oscillation button to switch the panning movement on and off again. With the mode button you can also adjust the speed (3 levels) or switch on the sleep mode by pressing and holding it for a long time. The timer button sets the timer to 1, 2 or 3 hours.

In addition, Xiaomi has installed a total of five status LEDs. Three for the respective speed level and/or timer, one for successful WiFi connection and one for night mode.

Operation via app

As with the other models, the app integration is also possible with the Mi Fan 2 Lite, the fan also works with the Mi Home aka Xiaomi Home app for iOS and Android. Anyone who has ever integrated a Mijia device into the app will not have any difficulties. Register/Login Mi Home Account and then press the plus in the top right corner. The Mi Fan should then actually be found automatically via scan, but if not you can simply search for it manually. Then reset the WLAN (instructions are displayed) and enter the password and it should work.

However, the app offers a slightly smaller range of functions than that of the Xiaomi Smartmi Standing Fan 2 and 2S. It stays with the three speed levels, originally there was talk of 100 settings. But here too you can choose between the “direct breeze mode” and the sleep mode, which also offers three levels and set the timer to even up to 8 hours. You should also turn off the annoying notification sound right at the beginning. Optionally, the LEDs can also be deactivated and a child safety lock can be set up.

Not only can it be controlled remotely, it can also be paired with the Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa . In the case of Google Assistant, this requires a link between the Mi Home app and Google Assistant, which you set up via the Assistant app. If you have already had experience using Alexa, please let us know in the comments!

A breath of fresh air?

The seven rotor blades can provide a cool breeze in three different speed settings. In contrast to the Smartmi Standing Fan 2 and 2S, this is theoretically 97 levels less, since the app has the corresponding adjustment via slider. However, the Smartmi Standing Fan 2 also divides these 100 “levels” into four different levels, so that the difference is theoretically not that big.

In my opinion, the speed of the rotor blades is comparable to the Standing Fan 2 on the maximum setting, but the volume is a good bit higher, so that I could not fall asleep with it. The first and second levels are much more tolerable and also provide a cooling effect.

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 1C/ Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite supports two modes: a standard and a sleep mode. The second is of course practical, especially at night, since the fan should only be 37.2 dB loud according to the manufacturer. We can almost share the result, but only at level 1. Whispering in the background actually caused the decibel meter to deflect more. The second mode is also still tolerable, we agree that you can fall asleep with it if you are not too sensitive. Only the third stage is probably too loud for most people, including me.

The sleep mode is theoretically comparable to the nature mode of the Smartmi Standing Fan 2. Real wind is simulated by varying the intensity of the draft. So far I haven’t seen any regularity. The volume is reduced a bit, but here too the third level is unfortunately a bit too loud for me to sleep on.

Differences to other models

The smart Xiaomi fan 1C is the first official global version of a Xiaomi fan, but you can still get the Xiaomi Smartmi Standing Fan 2 and Smartmi Standing Fan 2S from German shops like Cyberport and Amazon. The only difference between these two models is the integrated 2,800 mAh battery of the 2S, which is supposed to last up to 16 hours. The shops charge a good 20 to 30€ more for this than for the Smartmi Fan 2.

Unlike these two models, the 1C works with an AC (alternating current) motor. Thus, power consumption of 45W is higher than the 33.6W power consumption of the Smartmi 2S fan. As a result, the Xiaomi Smartmi standing fan 2 and 2S can also be quieter. The shops give the volume as 29 db.

There is now also the Xiaomi Smartmi Standing Fan 3, which is also equipped with an integrated air purifier or ionizer and, like the 2S, can also be used in battery mode.

Conclusion: Buy Xiaomi Mi Fan 1C/Mi Fan 2 Lite?

The manufacturer got into some trouble with the Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 1C/Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite. Late release, delivery delays and then wrong information in the German online shops. And yet the Xiaomi Mi Fan 1C is a really successful smart home gadget. A smart pedestal fan for less than €50 in Xiaomi hardware and software quality? Otherwise it doesn’t exist! If you only want a pedestal fan and can do without the app control, you will certainly find it on Amazon for less.

In addition to the timeless and high-quality design, you pay for the integration into the Mi Home app, in which you have a lot of leeway thanks to automations and other gadgets. As expected, the fan itself is a bit louder than the Smartmi Standing Fan 2, but is still quiet enough to fall asleep at levels 1 and 2 in both modes. Especially with temperatures above 30°C, you’d rather put up with the quiet whirring of the fan than melt away in bed, right?

I don’t want to be without my Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite anymore, but I would also be satisfied with the 2 Lite in everyday life. The surcharge is justified. But if you don’t see spending more than 50€ for a fan, the Mi Fan 1C/2 Lite is also a good choice.
